Hoboken, NJ- Visiting Nazareth was outscored 15-5 over the final three quarters on Saturday, as it fell 20-8 to No. 17 Stevens in the first Empire 8 game of the season. Stevens scored five goals in all four quarters.
The Golden Flyers drop to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in Empire 8 play, while Stevens moves to 7-1 and 1-0 respectively.
Nazareth held the lead to begin the game as
Jon Lippert opened up the scoring.
Paul Walter had two goals in the quarter, including giving Nazareth a 3-1 lead. The Ducks, however, managed to score the next four goals to take a 5-3 margin into the second.
As has been the case in other games this season, Nazareth struggled in the face-off circle, winning just 9-of-29 attempts. Stevens was 6-for-6 in the third quarter alone.
The Golden Flyers were also hampered by penalties in the game, as Stevens went 6-for-11 on extra-man opportunities, compared to just 1-for-5 for Nazareth.
After Walter's goal near the midway point of the first, Nazareth would not find the net again until
Anthony Basile lit the lamp with :30 seconds remaining in the half to make it 10-4.
Lippert scored again for Nazareth in the fourth, along with
Kevin Hussey and
Drew McNerney.
Rick Kronenwett suffered the loss in the net, allowing six goals in 19:40 of action.
Andrew Leahey played the most minutes (35:46), surrendering 11 goals to go along with eight saves.
Joe Whitmore and
David Walk also saw time between the pipes.
Nick Rodin,
Chris Murphy,
Jacob Edmands,
Mike Riis, and
Colin McElligott each had assists in the loss.
