Nazareth holds off Hamilton for second win, 14-12

Golden Flyers open Empire 8 Conference play Saturday at Stevens

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Jeremy Jacob scored three times and Jack Crowley and Jacob Gray each scored twice for host Nazareth Wednesday as the Golden Flyers defeated Hamilton in a competitive non-conference men's lacrosse game, 14-12.

Ten different players scored for the Golden Flyers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 2-5 overall. Hamilton dropped to 1-5.

Trailing 9-8 late in the third quarter, Nazareth used a 6-1 scoring spree that bridged the third and fourth quarters to secure command of a game that was close throughout. Neither team led by more than two goals until Crowley's man-up goal with 8:40 left put Nazareth on top 13-10. Then with 4:00 left and the shot clock winding down, Colin McElligott scored on a left-handed bouncer to give Nazareth a four-goal lead at 14-10.

Hamilton scored twice in the last three minutes to trim the deficit to 14-12, but Nazareth played solidly defensively in front of freshman goalie Joe Whitmore, who came on in the third quarter after starter Alex Winkler allowed Hamilton'[s ninth goal with 6:00 left in the third quarter.

With the assistance of strong face-off play from Eric Zurmuehle, who won 16 of 27 draws overall, Hamilton controlled possession early on to forge a 4-3 first-quarter lead. Jon Lippert netted his first career goal in the opening quarter for the Golden Flyers, who lso got tallies from Jacob and Drew McNerney.

Nazareth got second-quarter goals from Gray, Crowley, Anthony Basile and Tristan Gosselin to take a 7-6 lead, but Hamilton's Henry Hill scored unassisted with just :11 left in the half to tie the score at 7-7.

The Golden Flyers regained the lead, 8-7, on a goal by Myles Young early in the third quarter, but Hamilton scored two straight to regain the lead for the last time at 9-8.

Gray's second goal of the game off an assist from Young tied the score again. Then Paul Walter delivered the go-ahead score off an assist from Basile. Jacob then scored unassisted with :58 left in the quarter as Nazareth took its first two-goal advantage at 11-9 heading to the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Zach Larsen scored his third gol of the game in the opening minute to draw Hamilton back to within one at 11-10. Nazareth then got the next three goals to create the four-goal cushion. Jacob's third goal of the game came on a right-handed bouncer. Then Chris Murphy set up Crowley's extra-man tally with 8:40 to go. McElligot then scored his third goal of the season to give the Golden Flyers some breathing room.

Gosselin played well defensively for Nazareth and helped neutralize Zemuehle at the face-off x by winning nine of 18 draws and collecting four ground balls.

Winkler finished with four saves over 39 minutes and Whitmore had three.

Nazareth returns to action Saturday at Stevens in its Empire 8 Conference opener at 1 p.m.
