OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Fourth-ranked York scored the first five goals of the game and led 10-2 at halftime on the way to an 18-3 men's lacrosse victory over the Golden Flyers Friday on the first day of the Mustang Classic hosted by Stevenson University.
Seniors
Jacob Gray and
Paul Walter each scored goals for Nazareth along with freshman
Jeremy Jacob as the Golden Flyers dropped to 1-4 overall. York improved to 6-1. Nazareth plays again Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Lynchburg also at Stevenson.
Looking very much like they belong among the top-ranked teams in Division III, the Spartans dominated the Golden Flyers from start to finish with advantages in shots (50-25), ground balls (36-20) and face-offs (15-8). Matthew Whitcher scored five goals and added an assist and Thomas Pfeiffer and Dillon Hannah each scored three times.
Hannah scored unassisted just 38 seconds into the game and Pfeiffer added an unassisted tally just 27 seconds after that to get York off to a good start. The Spartans added three more goals within a span of 1:29 to extend the lead to 5-0 before the Golden Flyers could take a breath. Jacob finally got the Nazareth on the scoreboard with 4:35 left in the quarter with his team-leading 10th goal.
Whitcher scored three more times for York in the second quarter as York extended its lead to 10-2 before halftime. Walter scored a goal for Nazareth off an assist from
Jonathan Olbrich, but after that York reeled off 11 straight goals to turn the game into a rout. Gray added Nazareth's final goal with just :30 left in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore
Alex Winkler started in goal for Nazareth and made 13 saves while yielding 16 goals. Freshman
Joe Whitmore played the final 10-plus minutes and made 1 saves while allowing two goals.
