Nazareth falls to Western New England, 19-10

Golden Bears pull away with fourth quarter scoring run

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Nazareth's men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest 19-10 to Western New England on Sunday. The game was played at the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. Junior Jack Crowley and freshman Jeremy Jacob each scored three goals for the Golden Flyers.

Following the loss, Nazareth falls to 1-3 overall while Western New England improves to 3-1 overall with the win.

The Golden Flyers and Golden Bears traded goals to open the first 11 minutes of the game. After Justin Holl opened the scoring for Western New England less than a minute into regulation, Crowley put Nazareth on the board after receiving a pass from senior Paul Walter. Junior Myles Young evened the game at two goals apiece with an unassisted goal with 4:12 to play in the quarter. The Golden Bears scored a pair of goals in the final three minutes of the period to claim a 4-2 lead going into the second quarter.

Following Crowley's second goal of the game, Jacob tallied two goals in a span of 56 seconds to tie the score 5-5 just 4:13 into the second quarter. Western New England found the back of the Golden Flyers' net twice before halftime to take a 7-5 lead into the second half.

The Golden Bears continued their offensive attack to start the third quarter as Western New England scored three times in the first 5:27 of the period to stretch their lead to 10-6. Senior Jacob Gray had Nazareth's lone goal to temporarily close the gap to two goals, 8-6. Later in the third, Gray assisted on Young's goal. Following his goal, Young was on the passing end of Jeremy Jacob's third goal of the game, which brought the Golden Flyers' deficit to three goals. The Golden Bears answered Nazareth's run by scoring twice in a nine-second span to take a 13-8 lead with 1:07 to play in the period.

In the opening minutes of the fourth, Gray and Crowley scored unassisted goals in a span of 27 seconds to trim Western New England's lead to 13-10. Less than a minute after Crowley's goal, Nick Gamba's shot extended the Golden Bears' lead to four goals, which was the first of five straight goals to allow Western New England to pull away.

Nicholas Beauchamp and Gamba combined for nine goals to lead the Golden Bears' potent offense.

Nazareth finished with a 37-32 advantage in total shots, but the Golden Bears had a commanding advantage in ground balls (44-27) and faceoff victories (24-9). The Golden Flyers committed only nine turnovers while Western New England had 16. Sophomore Parker Lawrence led Nazareth with two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Alex Winkler started in the Nazareth net and recorded three saves while allowing 13 goals in 50:03 of action. Classmate Andrew Leahey saw action in the final 10 minutes and recorded one save while allowing three goals. Steven Kerr earned the victory for the Golden Bears with 12 saves.

Nazareth travels to Owings Mills, Maryland for a pair of games next week. The Golden Flyers play fifth-ranked York on Friday and 19th-ranked Lynchburg on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 12:30.
