ITHACA, NY – The Nazareth women's lacrosse squad opened up against a familiar foe Saturday, falling 14-8 to Ithaca College in non-conference play. Ithaca, a longtime member of the Empire 8, began competing in the Liberty League beginning in the 2017-18 season. Ithaca built a large lead at halftime that the Golden Flyers were unable to recover from.
With the loss, Nazareth drops to 0-1 on the season, while Ithaca moves to 1-0.
Trailing 8-2 at the half, Nazareth clawed its way back to come within 12-8 with under six minutes remaining. Senior
Katie Carroll, who had three second half goals, capped a three goal surge for Nazareth on an extra-man tally to make it 12-8. Carroll also had four draw controls.
The Golden Flyers hampered their comeback attempt with a yellow card shortly after and the Bombers took advantage with a goal. They added another insurance goal later.
Ithaca jumped out to a 4-0 lead over in the first half before
Haley DeVona scored 8:52 in. She then scored again to make it 4-2 with 17:01 on the clock. DeVona finished the game with three goals.
It was all Ithaca the rest of the half, as it went on to score four consecutive goal to push the lead to 8-2 at the break.
The Bombers held 41-22 advantage in shots.
Freshman
Tori Blazey scored her first-career goal and added two assists in the losing effort.
Jamie Martin also scored for Nazareth.
Junior
Brianna Rizzari finished with 14 saves in net.
Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday for its home-opener, hosting Brockport at 4 p.m.
