Alfred, NY – The Nazareth women's basketball team took care of business Tuesday night, defeating Alfred 64-50 in the final regular season game for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth (13-12 overall, 9-7 Empire 8) keeps its playoff hopes alive with the win, battling with Houghton (8-6) and Stevens (8-6) for the final spot in the four-team Empire 8 Championships held February 23/24. Nazareth will await its post-season fate following the completion of regular season games over the weekend.
Rachel Benedict continued her hot stretch of basketball, leading Nazareth with 22 points (8-for-13), to go along with 11 rebounds. It was the sophomore's fifth-straight game scoring 22 points or more. It was also her third-straight double-double and 12
th of the season.
Nazareth led by as many as 10 in the opening half, although the Saxons kept it to 31-25 at the break.
The Golden Flyers struggled from distance in the half, shooting 2-for-12. Benedict, who had one of Nazareth's triples, had 11 points (4-for-8) and seven boards to fuel the offense.
In the second half, the Saxons hung around, coming within nine points with under five minutes to play. Nazareth, however, responded with a Benedict 3-pointer and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Senior
Samantha Peebles put together a balanced performance, going for 14 points, with seven assists and seven rebounds.
Lizzie Straub contributed 10 points, while
Delaney Martin had eight and
Haley Schoelerman six.
