ALFRED, N.Y. -- Alfred's Nick Schmidt scored 19 points, including a game-winning three-point shot from the left corner with :07 to go to lift the host Saxons to an 89-87 come-from-behind victory over Nazareth in men's basketball.
Needing a victory to clinch the regular-season title in the Empire 8 Conference, the Golden Flyers instead fell to a disappointing defeat in their regular-season finale as they had a seven-game win streak snapped to fall to 18-7 overall and 13-3 in conference games. The Golden Flyers will need some help to gain the top seed for next week's conference tournament. Stevens, at 12-2 in conference play -- with both losses coming against Nazareth -- has a one-game lead with two games to play. The Ducks are at Elmira Friday and at Utica Saturday.
The victory bolstered Alfred's chances of making the E8 Tournament as the third-place Saxons improved to 10-4 in conference play and 17-6 overall.
The Golden Flyers got a game-high 30 points from
Tyler Stenglein and 16 from
Brendan Wind and appeared to be well on their way to gaining the conference's top seed for the first time ever. They led by as many as 17 points early in the second half before ultimately succumbing to the Saxons' desperate comeback.
Wind scored 10 of his points in the first half and Stenglein added nine to give the Golden Flyers a seemingly safe 38-27 lead through 20 minutes. Nazareth kept the pressure on to start the second half and a basket by
Stephen Gabel with less than 15 minutes left extended the lead to a game-high 17 points, 54-37.
Alfred came back behind the scoring of Schmidt, who scored all of his 19 points in the second half, including his team's last seven over the final 21 seconds. The Golden Flyers also assisted by missing six free throws in the final 80 seconds.
Nazareth still led 87-84 following a free throw by Wind with :20 left. Schmidt sank two free throws with :12 left to slice the deficit to one, 87-86, then a Nazareth turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass enabled Alfred to call timeout to set up Schmidt's winning shot. A last-ditch attempt by Nazareth's
Daniel Jacob fell short as time expired.
The sour defeat spoiled yet another strong performance by Stenglein, whose 30 points came on 10-for-16 shooting from the outside with four three-pointers. She also was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Wind added five assists to his 16 points.
Chris Jones scored 13 and
Jake Burgio finished with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
