CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Thirteenth-ranked Vassar broke open a close men's volleyball match Sunday by taking the third and fourth sets in decisive fashion to defeat Nazareth in four sets. Scores were 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 25-13.

The defeat left the Golden Flyers with a split of weekend United Volleyball Conference matches as they also defeated MIT in four sets on Saturday. The Golden Flyers are now 7-5 overall and 1-1 in UVC action. Vassar improved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

Sophomore Sean Dillon had 12 kills on 18 swings for a .556 hitting percentage to pace the Golden Flyers. Senior Kane Wittorff added nine kills and senior Sam Bittker had eight. Senior setter Jake Kemp delivered 35 assists and sophomore libero Luis Vazquez had 12 digs.

Matthew Knigge had a match-best 20 kills for Vassar, including six in the first set as the Brewers held on for a two-point win. Nazareth rallied to tie the set at 24-24 on a block by Wittorff, but Vassar came back to take the next two points to win the set.

Nazareth evened the score by taking the second set in convincing fashion with Dillon accounting for five kills and one block. A kill by Dillon late in the set extended Nazareth's lead to 23-18. Then kills by Antonio Sargent and Bittker sealed the set.

Nazareth led 14-11 in the third set to force a Vassar timeout. The Brewers then promptly scored eight of the next nine points to take control of the set and the match. The fourth set was more one-sided as Vassar surged to a 12-6 lead and wasn't challenged thereafter.

Nazareth is home to host the Golden Flyer Invitational Friday and Saturday. Nazareth plays Wells and Cal Lutheran Friday at 2 and 6 p.m. respectively.
