ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman
Zein Mohamed scored the only goal that was necessary Saturday in the 14th minute to lift host Nazareth to a key 1-0 men's soccer victory over St. John Fisher.
The Golden Flyers' sixth shutout of the season enabled them to improve to 7-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in Empire 8 action. Fisher dropped to 2-8-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the E8.
Fisher nearly scored in the third minute of play when a shot by Justin Bonetto rocketed off the crossbar. That was one of only two shots the Cardinals generated in the first half, compared to 11 for Nazareth.
Mohamed finally broke free for his fourth goal of the season after receiving a pass from
Jake Adams, who gained his fifth assist. Mohamed made a move to create space past Fisher goalkeeper Joe Catalfamo and fired a shot into the goal.
Both teams were able to create scoring chances in the second half, including one a free kick awarded to Nazareth inside the Fisher penalty area.
Francesco Viavattene tapped a short pass to Adams, who was unable to get a quality shot off.
Nazareth goalkeeper
Brian Wilkin was able to squelch the remaining Fisher opportunities by making all five of his saves in the second half. Catalfamo made three saves for Fisher.
Nazareth is home again Wednesday for a non-conference game against Alfred State at 6 p.m. The Golden Flyers resume their Empire 8 Conference schedule Saturday at Alfred at 6 p.m.
