ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth's newest intercollegiate team had a successful debut Friday evening as the Golden Flyers rallied past fellow first-year program Anna Maria, 5-1, in non-conference women's hockey action at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.

After falling behind early, the Golden Flyers roared back to score five unanswered goals as they dominated the Amcats most of the way. Five different players scored for the Golden Flyers, utilizing a roster comprised of 24 freshmen. The Golden Flyers had a whopping 62-13 advantage in shots and went 3-for-8 on the power play.

"I thought it was a great effort from start to finish," said Nazareth Coach Chris Baudo. "I think that ultimately our depth wore them down. From top to bottom, I thought our girls really brought it today."

An early giveaway, though, enabled Anna Maria to get on the scoreboard first. The Amcats' Katahdin Whitney intercepted a pass, gathered the loose puck and gained an early breakaway. Her wrist shot over the left shoulder of Nazareth goaltender Adrianna Brehm resulted in a 1-0 lead just 1:30 into the game.

It was pretty much all Nazareth thereafter. Freshman Taylor Hudon scored the first goal in the program's history at 12:44 of the opening period to tie the score at 1-1. Cristina Darby and Hannah Tulchinsky assisted.

Nazareth went to work again early in the second period as Mikaila Rubin netted the first power play goal with assists from Hailey Redders and Jessica Kollberg. That came at 2:31 of the second and was followed by an even-strength goal by Redders at 11:25 with assists from Emily Kromer and Lauren Jones.

The Golden Flyers added a pair of power play tallies in the third period as Kromer and Keeley Rose each netted their first collegiate goals. Rose scored first at 8:04 off assists from Nikolle Van Stralen and Kromer. Then Kromer, who finished with three points, scored at 13:39 off a rebound of a shot by Stephanie Kubis.

Brehm played all 60 minutes in goal for Nazareth and finished with 12 saves. Gabriella Ohanesia played the first two periods for the Amcats and was busy in making 39 saves. She was relieved by Sawyer Duncan in the third period and she has 18 more saves. Nazareth also did well in winning faceoffs by taking 35 of 48 draws with Darby and Rubin each winning 11.

The Golden Flyers play Anna Maria again Saturday at 2 p.m.
