ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Carmen Sapp recorded a career-high 19 kills and fellow senior Kelsey Milligan added 13 as the Nazareth College volleyball team delivered a 3-1 win over Utica College Wednesday night in an Empire 8 match and Senior Night at Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth (19-10 overall, 7-1 E8) won the first set 25-23 but Utica (6-21, 2-7) battled back and evened the match with a 25-21 win in the second set. The Golden Flyers regrouped and scored wins of 25-11 and 25-15 in the third and fourth sets to complete the victory.
Sapp cruised past her previous career best of 14 kills as she led the attack for Nazareth. Milligan inched closer to the 1,000-career kill milestone and is just three kills from the mark heading into the final regular season weekend of action as Nazareth hosts the New York Regional Challenge Friday and Saturday in Kidera Gymnasium.
The victory over Utica clinched the No. 2 seed for the Golden Flyers in the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament that will be played Nov. 2-3 at Stevens.
Prior to the start of the match, the five seniors for Nazareth were honored and all five played a role in the win. Madison Joseph had seven kills and Margorie Didas added four kills while Celia Cordero chipped in nine digs and a pair of service aces,
Junior Melissa Newcomb had eight kills, sophomore Jessica Barry handed out 43 assists while fellow sophomore Savannah Bothner recorded a team best 12 digs and six aces.
The Golden Flyers will face Penn College at 5 p.m. and New York University at 7 p.m. Friday on the first day of competition for the New York Regional Challenge.
