Men’s Soccer Suffers Loss on Senior Day

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- After a scoreless first half, SUNY Delhi scored three times in the final 45 minutes and handed the Nazareth College men's soccer team a 3-1 defeat Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Golden Flyer Stadium.

Prior to the game, the five seniors on the Nazareth were honored as Mitchell Fors, Zach Titus, AJ Muoio, James Walsh and Josh Ripic were each remembered and honored for their careers for the Golden Flyers.

Both Nazareth (9-6-1) and SUNY Delhi (10-2-0) had scoring chances in the first half but neither was able to get on the scoreboard. The best chance for the Golden Flyers was six minutes into the contest as Nazareth was awarded a penalty kick but a diving save kept the game scoreless.

Just less than five minutes into the second half, the Broncos broke the scoreless tie as the leading scorer for SUNY Delhi, Alhasane Sako broke free on the right side of the box and fired a shot off the inside of the post that deflected into the goal to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

Just 10 minutes later, Nazareth knotted the score as sophomore Justin Pumputis fired a shot from the top of the box that deflected off the goalie and to the foot of freshman Adoniadis Savidis who scored into the open half of the goal to tie the score at 1-1.

The celebration did not last long as Delhi came right back down the field after the restart and scored 32 seconds later as Sako netted his second of the game after a failed clearing attempt by the Golden Flyers.

The Broncos added a late goal after the first shot hit the post and a SUNY Delhi player was able to knock in the rebound for the final margin of victory.

The Golden Flyers return to Empire 8 play Saturday at Houghton and will wrap up the regular season at home against Hartwick the following Monday.
