Women's soccer prevails on late penalty kick, 1-0

Box | Updated stats
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Elizabeth Guidi converted a penalty kick and junior goalkeeper Hannah Miller equaled a career high with 16 saves Saturday as host Nazareth defeated Carnegie Mellon, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match.

Despite a 25-6 disadvantage in shots, the Golden Flyers prevailed to improve to 7-5-4 overall, while the Tartans dropped their fourth straight to drop to 7-6-1 overall.

In addition to shots, Carnegie Mellon had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks and generally controlled the pace of play. The Tartans had nine shots in the first half to three for Nazareth, but Miller stood tall in goal with four first-half saves. The Tartans had multiple chances in the second, including shots by Stephanie Ramsay and Kaily Bruch from point-blank range that Miller turned aside.

Nazareth's chances were few and far between, but they finally generated an opportunity in the 77th minute when sophomore Kristen Prohaska was tripped up in the penalty area, resulting in their first penalty kick of the season. Guidi stepped up and delivered the decisive strike for her second tally of the season.

Carnegie Mellon had additional chances in the closing minutes, but Miller came through time and again with 12 more saves in the final 45 minutes. Miller posted 16 saves twice before -- at Sage earlier this season and last year at St. Lawrence.

In the final minute, the Tartans pulled all their players, including goalkeeper Andrea Sipos, over the midfield stripe in an effort to score the tying goal. Freshman Mallory Ott broke loose for Nazareth and was fouled by Sipos, which resulted in a red card for the Tartans' keeper.

Nazareth has two more regular-season games remaining -- Wednesday at home against Buffalo State at 4 p.m. and Saturday at home against Houghton at 1 p.m.
