ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Stevens' men's soccer domination of the Empire 8 Conference continued Saturday as the visiting Ducks scored a pair of second-half goals for a 2-0 victory over the Golden Flyers.
The Ducks improved to 6-0 in the E8 and 14-2-1 overall and are now 15-0-1 all-time against the Golden Flyers. Nazareth dropped to 9-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Golden Flyers are back in action Sunday at home against SUNY Delhi in a non-conference match at 1 p.m.
Stevens kept the Golden Flyers on the defensive most of the game with a 15-4 advantage in shots, including a 7-0 edge in the first half. Nazareth played well defensively in front of junior keeper
Brian Wilkin, who was called upon to make five saves.
The Ducks finally broke through in the 51st minute as Daniel Aversano scored his first of two goals. He received a pass from Andrew Masur and drilled a left-footed shot past Wilkin for his seventh goal of the season. He scored again with less than two minutes to go after a foul in penalty area. Aversano then buried the resulting penalty kick for the 2-0 margin.
Nazareth had limited scoring chances. Only
Sam Smyth delivered a shot on goal. And it was Smyth who crossed the ball in front that
Colin Brickwood headed over the crossbar.
Justin Pumputis also was credited with a shot.
Wilkin made five saves for the Golden Flyers, while Stevens keeper Aaron Henry made one for the shutout.
