PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Goals continue to be tough to come by for the Nazareth women's soccer team. The Golden Flyers battled to a 0-0 tie at St. John Fisher Wednesday to put the post-season playoff picture further into obscurity.
Nazareth is 6-5-4 overall and 2-2-3 in Empire 8 action, while Fisher is 6-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in conference action. With the top four teams qualifying for next month's E8 Tournament, Nazareth has just one conference game remaining -- Oct. 27 at home against Houghton. Fisher, meanwhile, has three conference games left -- road games at Alfred and Utica and a home game against Elmira. Utica, at 3-1-1 in conference games, and Sage, 2-2-1, also are in the mix. as the regular season winds down. Stevens (6-0) and Hartwick (4-2) occupy first and second place respectively.
Nazareth had some scoring chances Wednesday, but the Golden Flyers were left frustrated once again as they were shut out for the third game in a row. Nazareth had a 15-11 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and generally controlled possession time. Probably their most controlled stretch came in the last 10 minutes of the second half. They were able to generate three corner kicks in a four-minute stretch, but the only shots came from
Mia Longo and
Lindsie Farrance and both sailed wide.
Early in he second overtime,
Elizabeth Guidi unleashed a shot from about 25 yards out on which Fisher Keeper Melissa McGowan needed to make a tip-toe save. Another opportunity came with about 1:30 left when McGowan outraced Longo to a loose ball in front of the goal.
Early in the second half, Nazareth created a decent chance when Guidi played a short corner kick to
Ashley Plane, whose shot was saved by McGowan. The rebound came out in front of the goal to
Caleigh Cahoon, but her bid flew over the top of the crossbar.
Hannah Miller made seven saves for Nazareth, including two routine stops in the second overtime.
Nazareth is home Saturday for a non-league game against Carnegie Mellon at 11 a.m.
