HOBOKEN, N.J. -- A strong defensive effort led by 14 saves for junior Hannah Miller nearly led to an upset over regionally ranked Stevens Institute of Technology Saturday afternoon but a penalty shot goal midway through the first half gave the Ducks a slim 1-0 win over Nazareth in an Empire 8 game at Stevens.
Stevens (10-2 overall, 6-0 E8), ranked fifth in the latest United Coaches East Region poll, scored the only goal of the game on a penalty shot after a Nazareth (6-5-3, 2-2-2) foul in the box in the aftermath of a corner kick.
The Nazareth defense was tested all day as Stevens held a 25-3 edge in shots and a 15-1 advantage in shots on goal. Miller made six saves in the first half and added eight more in the second half. The 14 saves is third most in a game for her career as she recorded 16 saves at Sage earlier this season and also had 16 saves last season at St. Lawrence.
The 14 saves also put Miller over 100 for the season as she leads the Empire 8 with 108 saves on the season.
Nazareth is back in action Wednesday night with a 7 pm game at St. John Fisher in an Empire 8 matchup.
