ALFRED STATION, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jake Adams scored the only goal of the game and junior keeper Brian Wilkin stopped a penalty shot with 4:16 remaining to give the Nazareth College men's soccer team an important 1-0 victory over Alfred University Saturday night in an Empire 8 game at Alfred.
After a scoreless first half, Alfred (4-9-0 overall, 3-2-0 E8) had the first scoring chance of the period but a shot toward the corner of the Nazareth (9-3-1, 3-1-1) was stopped by sophomore Adrian Padilla with a slide to stop the ball and Wilkin picked up the loose ball.
On the counter attack from the missed opportunity, Nazareth moved the ball up the field quickly and Adams fired a shot past the Alfred keeper for the only goal of the game with just under 35 minutes to play.
The Saxons kept the pressure on for a majority of the half but were limited to shots from outside the 18-yard box until a run late in the game caused a foul in the box and a penalty shot for the Saxons.
The shot toward the left side of the goal was stopped by Wilkin as he made a diving stop.
Nazareth was able to move the ball to the other end of the field and not allow another scoring opportunity for the remainder of the game to seal the victory.
Wilkin finished with five saves and recorded his sixth shutout of the season.
The win is the third in a row and sixth in the last seven games for the Golden Flyers who will return to Rochester for three consecutive home games starting with a non-conference matchup with SUNY Geneseo at 4 pm Tuesday in Golden Flyer Stadium.
