Men's Hoops Staves Off Sage, 64-60

Rochester, NY – Nazareth gutted out a 64-60 win over Sage Saturday afternoon behind 21 points (8-for-15) from Jake Burgio and a career-high 19 rebounds.  Burgio, who is averaging 16.7 points this season, now has seven double-doubles on the season.  Tyler Stenglein added 19 points, with 12 of them (12-for-13) coming from the foul line.

With the win, Nazareth moves to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play, while Sage falls to 7-11 and 2-7, respectively. 

After Nazareth held a seven point halftime lead, Sage was able to bring the score within one point twice during the second half, but never was able to tie or go ahead. 

The Gators got into foul trouble early in the second, putting Nazareth in the bonus with 15:20 left in the game.

Nazareth finished the second half 14-for-20 from the foul line, including sophomore Cody Green sinking two key free throws with :17 seconds remaining to push the lead to 62-58.  He finished in double figures with 10 points.

With the score tied at 9-9, Nazareth used a 15-0 run over an eight minute span to open up some breathing room at 24-9.  Sage went 8:11 without scoring a basket.

The Gators had some pushback late in the half and were able to cut into the Golden Flyers halftime lead, 34-27.  Nazareth scored just four points over the final 3:57 of the half.

Burgio steadied the offense on 5-for-8 from the field, for 11 points. 

Stenglein had six rebounds and three assists in the win, while Chris Jones, Brendan Wind and Daniel Jacob each tallied four points. 

Nazareth returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Utica for a 6 p.m. showdown.  It will be Nazareth's second meeting against the Pioneers in four days – the Pioneers held off Nazareth 59-56 Friday night.
