ELMIRA, N.Y. – Cody Green, Nazareth's sharp-shooting sophomore guard, erupted for a game- and career-high 32 points Tuesday to lift the Golden Flyers to a 101-91 men's basketball victory over Elmira at the Soaring Eagles' Speidel Gymnasium.

The victory, the seventh in their last nine games, enabled the Golden Flyers to get back on track in the Empire 8 Conference after suffering their first E8 loss at Hartwick last Saturday. Nazareth improved to 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference games. Elmira dropped to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in the E8. The Golden Flyers are home for a pair of conference games this weekend. They host Utica Friday at 6 p.m. and Sage Saturday at 2.

Nazareth shot a blistering 60.6 percent (40-for-66) from the field, including 10-for-20 from three-point range, to ring up a season-high 101 points. Green was the primary trigger man by tying a school record with eight three-point baskets in 13 attempts. Junior Jake Burgio continued his strong play by scoring 20 points (10-for-12) and grabbing seven rebounds. Tyler Stenglein and Chris Jones each scored 12 points and Brendan Wind scored 10. Stenglein also had seven assists and Wind had six.

Nazareth was in control most of the game, but the Soaring Eagles were resilient in staying close. Even though Nazareth led by as many as 11 points in the first half, Elmira came back to tie the score at 46-46 late in the frame, but Nazareth got late buckets from Wind and Jones to lead 50-46 at the half.

Nazareth created some separation in the second half behind Green, who nailed three more three-point baskets to stretch the lead to 68-55 with 13 minutes left. The lead grew to a game-high 17 points, 81-64, following a layup by Burgio with 7:22 to go. Green continued to deliver as he knocked down two more threes down the stretch -- one with 5:24 left to make it 86-70 and one with 4:04 to go to make it 91-77. He also swished four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Elmira had four double-digit scorers, led by 19 each for Henry Cuffee and Shawn Backus. Justin Porrett combined 18 points with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Nazareth has dominated the overall series with Elmira in men's hoops by winning the last 25 meetings, covering 13 years. The Golden Flyers lead the series 45-20 overall. Three other Nazareth players also made eight three-pointers in a game. Jimmy Evans did it twice -- in 2001 and 2003. Michael DeBlois did it in 2004 and Joe Canori in 2005.
