ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored twice within an 85-second span early in the second half Friday as the Golden Flyers rallied for a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Oneonta at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The game was the season opener for both teams. The Golden Flyers, ranked 24th nationally in Division III, are home again Saturday to play Allegheny in non-conference action at 1 p.m.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime despite outshooting the Red Dragons 9-1 in the first 45 minutes, Nazareth got second-half goals from seniors
Nicole Petocchi and
Julia Delgatti to rally for the win.
Petocchi's goal came just 24 seconds into the second half as she blasted a shot over the outstretched finger tips of Oneonta goalkeeper Emilie Mull after receiving a short pass in the box from Delgatti, who gained the assist.
Just 1:25 later, Delgatti scored the game-winner as she squared up a shot after accepting a crossing pass from senior
Kate Billington, who had burst up the right wing.
The Golden Flyers had another golden chance in the 63rd minute when senior
Paige Sullivan one-timed a corner kick by Billington that was cleared off the end line by Oneonta's Kelsie Moinzadeh.
After controlling the action early in the game, Nazareth fell behind in the eighth minute when Oneonta's Hannah Kaplan burst up the right wing and centered a pass that was initially cleared. The ball ended up on the foot of Julie Steinhauer, who blasted it into the goal for an early Oneonta lead.
Nazareth had an 18-5 advantage in shots overall with Delgatti and Petocchi each generating three. Nazareth also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
