St. George Cranks Walk-Off Grand Slam; Naz Sweeps Elmira

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Delaney St. George went 4-for-5 with eight RBI, including a walk-off grand slam in game two to help Nazareth earn a sweep of Elmira on Sunday.  Nazareth won game one 9-1, before using a nine-run fifth inning in game two to knock of the Soaring Eagles, 10-1. 

The Golden Flyers record improves to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in Empire 8 play, while Elmira drops to 1-4 and 0-4, respectively.

Nazareth returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Geneseo for a doubleheader, beginning at 3 p.m.

Game 1 – Nazareth 9, Elmira 1 (5 innings)

Four players finished with a multi-hit game, spearheaded by St. George going 2-for-2 with four RBI.

A six-run second inning gave the Golden Flyers a cushion.  Rachel Mertens and Marissa Tortora picked up RBI singles.  St. George smashed a double to score Mertens and Kristen Simmons doubled to score two more runs.

Following an error, Stephanie Mongelli made the Soaring Eagles pay with an RBI single.

In the third inning, St. George blasted three-run home run opposite field to push Nazareth's lead to 9-0. 

Elmira scored its lone run in the fourth on a solo shot.

Mertens, Meghan Barry and Simmons were each 2-for-3 in the victory.

Nicole White picked up the win in the circle, allowing three hits and striking out six.

Game 2 – Nazareth 10, Elmira 1 (5 innings)  

Nazareth broke open a 1-1 tie with nine runs in the fifth inning.  The game-winning run came on a bloop single from Sarah Papponetti to score St. George.  Tortora, Mongelli and White each ripped RBI doubles in the inning, along Barry cracking an RBI to make it 6-1.  With the bases loaded, St. George belted a grand slam to straight-away center to complete the sweep for Nazareth.  It was her third home run in two days. 

Emily Carlin singled in the first to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.  The Golden Flyers evened the score in the second with White scoring on a Mertens fielder's choice. 

Papponetti, Mongelli and Barry each went 2-for-3 with one RBI.  White was 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Mertens improved to 5-1 on the season, mowing down six batters and allowing three hits.
