FORT MYERS, FL – The Nazareth softball squad finished its spring break trip on a high note Friday morning, earning consecutive shutout wins against Crown (MN) and North Central (IL). Nazareth blanked Crown 1-0, before defeating North Central 8-0 in six innings.
Nazareth caps its spring break trip with a 7-3 record.
Game 1 - Nazareth 1, Crown 0
In a game which both teams combined for just seven hits, it was the Golden Flyers that prevailed behind a dominant pitching performance from
Nicole White. White allowed just two hits in the shutout win. She went seven innings, striking out five batters. With the win, she moves to 3-1 on the season.
It was a pitching duel throughout, with each team having to work hard to put the ball in play. The Golden Flyers had five hits in the game.
Nazareth was able to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth with
Kristen Simmons and
Sarah Papponetti delivering with two outs. Simmons singled to left and advanced to second on the throw. The very next batter, Papponetti slapped a single to left to bring home Simmons for the lone run of the game.
Simmons was 2-for-3, while
Marissa Tortora and
Rachel Mertens also had hits for the Golden Flyers.
Game 2 – Nazareth 8, North Central 0 (6 innings)
Following White's strong performance on the mound, Mertens surrendered just four hits in the win over North Central to remain unbeaten on the season (4-0). She also struck out three batters in the game.
North Central was sloppy in the first inning, committing two errors and the Golden Flyers made them pay with four runs.
Simmons kept her strong day going, beginning with a double. White advanced Papponetti with the bases loaded for the second run.
Meghan Barry cashed in as the next batter with a two-RBI double to left center to make it 4-0.
Delaney St. George went opposite field in the fourth to push Barry across. Simmons notched her second hit, a double, to score St. George and make it 6-0. The freshman finished the day 5-for-7.
The final damage in the game came in the sixth, with Nazareth scoring two more runs to end the game early. St. George smacked a triple for an RBI. Later in the inning Papponetti put a ball in play that went through the legs of the third baseman to score St. George.
St. George, along with Barry were 2-for-3 in the victory.
