Softball Splits Day 3 In Florida

Updated Stats

Fort Myers, FL – The Nazareth softball team faced a pair of Massachusetts squads on Tuesday, dropping Nichols 5-1 to start the day before being blanked by Curry 4-0.

Nazareth now moves to 4-2 on the season.  The Golden Flyers will have Wednesday off and resume action on Thursday with a chance to get revenge on Curry at 9 a.m., followed by Wilmington (OH) at 11 a.m.

Game 1 – Nazareth 5, Nichols (MA) 1

Nazareth started well in the opening inning with three hits, including an RBI single from Nicole White to score Sarah Papponetti.  The Golden Flyers ended the inning with three left on base.

In the third inning, the Golden Flyers took advantage of two errors by the Bison to score two more runs from Marissa Tortora and White.

Nazareth made good on White and Meghan Barry starting off the fifth inning with back-to-back singles.  Rachel Mertens delivered a two-RBI single with two outs to score both runners and make it 5-0.

Nichols was able to get a run in the bottom half, however, White was able to get out of a jam by striking out the final batter.  She went the distance in the game to move to 2-1 on the season.  She finished with five strikeouts and just one earned run.  The senior also was 2-for-4 at the dish with an RBI.

Tortora was 3-for-4 in the win.

Game 2 – Curry (MA) 4, Nazareth 0

Nazareth managed just two hits in the game, compared to nine for Curry.  Nazareth was putting the ball into play with its bats, however, the Colonels seemed to be in the right place at the right time in most cases.

The Colonels added run in both the second and sixth innings.

Curry helped its cause in the fifth, as a two-RBI triple from Kevi Oatway with two outs gave the Colonels a 3-0 advantage.

Mongelli and Tortora had the lone hits for Nazareth.

Madison Zeis started the game and went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs while striking out one.  Mertens came on in relief to hold two runners on in the sixth.
