ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester Yellowjackets, ranked 17th nationally in the latest d3hoops.com poll, used a late 20-4 scoring run over the final five minutes to erase a four-point deficit and spoil Nazareth's upset plans to take a 75-63 men's basketball victory over Nazareth at RIT's Clark Gymnasium.
Nazareth closed out its first-semester schedule with a tough non-conference loss on the second day of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. Nazareth, 4-2 overall, is off until Dec. 28-29 when they travel to New Jersey to play in the Montclair Tournament. Rochester improved to 7-1 overall.
Tyler Stenglein scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Golden Flyers, who made just 6-of-27 shots in the second half.
Chris Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds and
Cody Green scored 12. Stenglein and Jones represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team.
Nazareth led 35-32 at the half and used a 9-2 scoring run to open the second half to boost the lead to 44-34 with 17:25 to go. Stenglein had a basket and two free throws,
Stephen Gabel added two free throws and Green nailed a three-pointer to cap the scoring run.
The Yellowjackets came back and chipped away at Nazareth's lead and finally tied the score at 55-55 on a basket by Ryan Clamage with 5:40 to go. Nazareth quickly regained the lead, 59-55, behind a pair of free throws by
Jake Burgio and a jumper by Green.
Nazareth still led 61-57 after a basket by Jones, but the Yellowjackets scored the next 14 points to take the lead for good and pull away for the win. Clamage scored six points during the scoring spree and Andrew Lundstrom and Patrick Benka each nailed three-point shots for UR.
Clamage went 10-for-10 from the foul line and finished with 19 points. He was matched in scoring by Jacob Wittig, who added four assists and three steals.
UR went 24-for-62 from the floor (38.7 percent), including 8-for-20 from three-point range. Nazareth went 18-for-53 (34 percent) and 4-for-16 from three-point range.
