MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Nazareth senior
Tyler Stenglein scored 16 points (5-for-11), pushing his career point total to 1,000, as the Golden Flyers downed Elizabethtown 69-53 in the consolation game of the Montclair Tournament. Stenglein becomes the 23
rd player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, doing so in 56 career games. He also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out six assists to record his third double-double of the season. After pouring in 47 points in the two tournament games, Stenglein garnered All-Tournament honors.
Nazareth led 33-22 at the half and maintained a comfortable double-digit margin for most of the second.
The Golden Flyers move to 5-3 overall with the victory, while Elizabethtown drops to 3-8.
Both teams started slow from the field, combining for just 22 points over the first nine minutes of play.
With the score tied at 10 apiece, Nazareth used a 23-6 run over a 10 minute span to open a 33-16 advantage with 1:42 remaining on the clock.
Nazareth used a balanced scoring attack, with
Jake Burgio leading the pack off six points on 3-for-4 from the field. He finished with a team-high 18 points (8-of-9) and six boards.
Kevin Underwood and
Daniel Jacob each canned 3-pointers to end the half with five points.
The Blue Jays were able to bring the score to 33-22 after closing out the half with the final six points.
After trimming the lead to single digits in the early moments, Nazareth re-established a double digit margin.
A pivotal point in the game came when the Golden Flyers went on an 8-0 run to blossom a 10-point lead to 59-41 with eight minutes remaining. Stenglein converted a traditional 3-point play and had five points on the run.
The Rochester, NY native secured his 16
th point in the game after converting one-of-two at the line with 2:43 on the clock, pushing him to 1,000 for his career. That gave the Golden Flyers a 66-48 lead.
Stephen Gabel (6-for-8) poured in nine points, while
Chris Jones (2-for-3) and Jacob (3-for-6) each contributed seven points. Gabel also grabbed 11 boards.
Nazareth opens up conference play on Tuesday, traveling to Sage for a 6 p.m. contest.
