RYE, N.Y. -- Junior David Powlowski scored the game-winning goal at 9:23 of the third period and the Golden Flyers rode the steady goaltending of sophomore Michael Tilford to take a 3-2 men's hockey victory over Manhattanville Saturday in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest.

The victory, coupled with Friday's 8-1 win at King's, enabled Nazareth to complete a much-needed weekend sweep of conference road games. The Golden Flyers improved to 5-5 overall and 4-2 in conference action. The host Valiants also lost to Utica Friday and now stand at 3-4-2 overall and 3-3 in the UCHC.

"It wasn't the prettiest of games, but the guys worked hard and gutted it out," said Nazareth Coach George Roll. "To have any aspirations of contending for a conference title, we needed to win these weekend games."

The Golden Flyers made the most of their scoring chances as they were outshot 34-17. Tilford had a strong game by making 32 saves, marking the sixth time this season he has amassed 30 saves or more in a game.

"He was steady for us the whole game," Roll said. "To be outshot like that, we needed a good effort from him in goal and we got it."

Nazareth led 2-0 after the first period, but surrendered a power-play goal in the second period and the tying goal early in the third. Powlowski's goal, his third of the season, came five minutes after the Valiants tied the score and came off a pass from senior John Power. Junior Jacob Paluch gained the secondary assist.

The Golden Flyers were efficient in the first period, managing only four shots on goal and scoring on two of them. Their first goal came 11 minutes into the game when James McDonald found himself with a one-on-one opportunity with Manhattanville goalie Tyler Feaver after a breakaway. He expertly lifted the puck into the upper corner of the net for his third goal of the season. Paluch and Ryan Walter were credited with assists.

Freshman Ray Falso made the score 2-0 four minutes later with his second goal of the weekend and fifth of the season. He scored on a rebound of an Austin Romzek shot to give the Golden Flyers a commanding advantage.

Nazareth committed two penalties in rapid succession midway through the second period to help the Valiants break up the shutout. McDonald and J.R. Wojciechowski were whistled for minor penalties that resulted in a 5-on-3 opportunity for the home team. The Valiants needed just 11 seconds to capitalize as Oscar Arfelt took advantage by blasting a shot past Tilford from the top of the left face-off circle.

Coincidental minors prevented what would have been another 5-on-3 chance for Manhattanville with 3:20 left in the second frame, and Nazareth was able to kill off the standard power play to maintain the one-goal lead after two periods.

A pair of skirmishes set Nazareth up with a 4-on-3 power play to open the final period, the Golden Flyers failed to score. Nazareth was 0-for-5 on the power play for the game.

Manhattanville finally tied the score at 4:22 of the third when Ryan Jackson flipped the puck from the blue line and it slipped under Tilford's glove. That set the stage for the game-winner by Powlowski, who finished off a pass from behind the goal by Power.

The Valiants emptied their goal in favor of an extra skater for the final 90 seconds, but the Golden Flyers were able to hold on.

After a stretch of five straight road games, Nazareth is back home to close out the first semester next weekend. The Golden Flyers host conference rivals Neumann Friday at 7 p.m. and Stevenson Saturday at 4.
