Aurora, NY – Nazareth saw thirteen different players score, including
Samantha Peebles (4-for-11) and
Rachel Benedict (7-for-11) each going for 16 points, as the Golden Flyers defeated Wells 72-32 in their season-opening game.
Nazareth moves to 1-0 on the year, while Wells drops to 0-1.
Each team got off to a slow start, as they combined for 23 points in the opening quarter with Nazareth holding a 13-9 advantage.
The Golden Flyers began the second quarter on a 9-0 run to open up a double-digit lead and never looked back. Lizzie Straub and Peebles connected on consecutive 3-pointers to make it 22-9.
The Express struggled to take care of the ball all game, turning it over 30 times which amounted to 26 points for the visitors.
Benedict (4-for-7) Peebles (2-for-7) poured in 10 points apiece in the opening half to help the Golden Flyers mount a 34-19 halftime lead. Sophomore Lizzie Straub also scored all seven of her points in the first half.
Nazareth's defense allowed just 13 points in the second half.
Benedict finished with a double-double after pulling down 13 boards.
Freshman Elizabeth White chipped in six points, to go along with a game-high four assists.
The Golden Flyers finished the game shooting nearly 48 percent from the floor (28-for-59).
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, hosting Keuka College at 1 p.m. for the Heritage Christian Services Classic. The Nazareth men's team will host Keuka following the women's game at 3 p.m.
