BUFFALO, N.Y. --
Tyler Stenglein scored a game-high 30 points and
Cody Green and
Jake Burgio added 22 and 19 points respectively as visiting Nazareth outlasted Medaille in a season-opening men's basketball game, 100-97.
The Golden Flyers led for most of the game and were up by as many as 10 points on two occasions -- once in the first half and once in the second -- before settling for the three-point triumph against a Medaille team that went 21-7 last season and was an NCAA Tournament qualifier. Nazareth also played without its second leading scorer from last season, junior
Brendan Wind, who was out with a lower-body injury.
Nazareth's win seemed secured when Green sank a pair of free throws with :43 left to extend the lead to 96-88. The Mavericks, however, answered by scoring the next seven points, including a three-point basket Brandon Roach, to trim the lead to one at 96-95 with :23 left. Green, however, hit two more free throws with :19 left and then, after a Medaille missed shot, Burgio corralled the rebound -- his game-best 13th -- and sank the two resulting free throws with :05 left to seal the deal.
Stenglein was difficult to guard throughout the game as he converted 11 of 19 field goal attempts in scoring his 30 points, just two shy of his career high set last season. He also passed for a team-high six assists. He scored 16 of his points in the first half as Nazareth led 50-47 at the break.
Green overcame a slow shooting start to reach a career-high point total. He went 7-for-13 from the field with four three-point baskets. He scored 10 in the first half, including a jumper in the paint with 3:19 to go to give Nazareth its largest lead at 46-36. Earlier in the half, Green was credited with an assist on a three-pointer by
Daniel Jacob that gave Nazareth the lead for good at 33-31 with 6:10 left in the half.
The Golden Flyers stayed ahead in the second half largely by sinking free throws. They sank 20-of-26 over the final 20 minutes. Burgio went 8-for-9 overall and
Chris Jones went 5-for-6 and finished with 11 points.
Nazareth shot 54.2 percent (32-for-59) from the field overall and enjoyed a 42-30 rebounding advantage with 14 offensive boards. The Mavericks had three players who surpassed 20 points, led by Mike Hollenbeck's 24 points and nine rebounds. Kirk Hawkins had 23 and Meghale Ford 22.
Nazareth plays its first home game Saturday against Keuka at 3 p.m. as part of the Heritage Christian Services Classic. Free student tickets (first come, first serve) will be available at the information desk.
