ROCHESTER, NY – A late goal decided Nazareth's military appreciation hockey game, as the Golden Flyers were defeated 3-2 by the Bryn Athyn Lions Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.  All proceeds from the game were donated to the Veterans Outreach Center (VOC) of Rochester.

The loss gave the Golden Flyers a disappointing weekend split of games after they defeated Elmira 5-1 on Friday. Nazareth is now 2-3 overall, while Bryn Athyn improved to 3-2 following the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Bryn Athyn was in control for most of the first period, scoring first, 3:30 minutes into the game against sophomore Andy Lee, who was making his first start of the season in goal for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth had two power play opportunities in the first period, but it was Bryn Athyn which capitalized on a power play of their own after Nazareth was called for having too many players on the ice. Goals by Alec Grollman and Zach Pamaylaon gave the Lions a 2-0 advantage after the first 20 minutes.

Nazareth battled back to tie the score with two goals in the second period. The Golden Flyers finally cashed in on the power play when a shot from the point by J.R. Wojciechowski was deflected into the goal by Brian Miller, who gained credit for his third goal of the season to trim the Lions' lead to 2-1.

Then, in the closing minute of the period, moments after killing off a Bryn Athyn power play, Nazareth took advantage of an odd-man rush as Matt Manzella dropped a pass for David Powlowski for a one-time slap shot that found the top right corner of the goal. That tied the score at 2-2.

In the third period, Nazareth outshot the Lions 12-6 and had three power play opportunities, including a five-minute chance midway through, but failed to score.

With just under six minutes remaining, Nazareth goaltender Andy Lee saved a shot by Nikita Smirnov, only to have the puck knocked back past him by Julion Lever of the Lions for the game-winning goal.

"It was a disappointing result for us tonight," said head coach George Roll. " Although we didn't come out with the win, I was really proud of how we were able to put on the Military Appreciation Game.  I owe a big thanks to my assistant, Eric Sorenson, for helping put this event together."

Nazareth outshot Bryn Athyn 36 to 24 and Lee had 21 saves. McKenzie Chalmers had 34 saves for Bryn Athyn.

Nazareth returns to action Friday, November 17 at 7:40 p.m. at Chatham.
