Flyers split doubleheader at UR

Nazareth wins first game 6-4; fall in nightcap 2-0

Game 1 | Game 2 | Updated stats
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth split a non-conference doubleheader in softball Thursday as the visiting Golden Flyers used a 14-hit attack to win the first game, 6-4, at the University of Rochester. The Golden Flyers' bats, however, were silenced in the second game as the Yellowjackets won 2-0.

Nazareth now stands at 12-8 overall, while UR sits at 10-17. The Golden Flyers resume their Empire 8 Conference schedule this weekend with road doubleheaders at Stevens Saturday and at Elmira Sunday.

In Thursday's first game, Nazareth scored all six of its runs in the fourth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and then rode the strong pitching of junior Nicole White to the win. Nazareth had seven hits in the fourth inning, including a two-run double by Maureen Rogers and run-scoring doubles by Sarah Papponetti and Carly Pike. Samantha Rogalski also drove in a run and Morgan Ross helped plate run another with a single.

Rochester had runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but White worked out of trouble and finished with three strikeouts while improving her record to 5-4. She also finished with three hits in four at bats, while Papponetti, Pike and Ross each had two hits.

In the second game, Nazareth managed only a pair of harmless singles off UR starter Eleni Weschler, who walked one and struck out two. Rogers had an infield single in the fourth and Marissa Tortora had a single in the seventh.

Rachel Mertens pitched well for Nazareth, but yielded two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. Jocelynn Blackshear delivered one run with a run-scoring single. She scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice.
