Women's Lax Wins Season-Opener Over William Smith, 15-12

GENEVA, NY – Visiting Nazareth erupted for 13 goals in the first half and held on for a 15-12 victory over William Smith College Saturday afternoon in the Golden Flyers season-opener.  Nazareth's Jamie Martin scored all five of her goals in the first half, while adding one assist to jump start the offense.

 With the win, Nazareth improves to 1-0 on the season.  Willam Smith falls to 0-2 on the year after losing during the week to SUNY Geneseo.

The first ten minutes of the contest featured back-and-forth action.  Martin scored the first two goals for Nazareth and Carly Gates added the third to tie the score at 3 at the 19:56 mark.

Nazareth took over the final 20 minutes of the half which included scoring the games' next seven goals in less than a 10 minute span to surge out to a 10-3 lead.

Nicole DeVona, a junior transfer from Onondaga Community College, scored her first goal at Nazareth to start the run off an assist from Katie Carroll.  Nicole's sister, Hayley DeVona, got in on the action shortly after with a goal of her own.

Martin registered three goals during the surge, one on the man-up advantage, while Gabbie Charles and Kate Rothrock tallied goals as well. 

The Herons broke a nearly 15 minute scoring drought with 7:56 left in the half and added another goal shortly after to cut the lead in half, 10-5.

Nazareth responded three goals, before William Smith scored the final two of the frame.  The Golden Flyers held a 13-7 halftime lead.

In the second half, Nazareth's only two goals came near the midway point.  Charles scored on the man-up followed by Hayley DeVona to give the visitors a 15-8 margin.

The Herons made it interesting, scoring the final four goals of the game, however Nazareth was able to hold on for the victory.

Hayley DeVona finished with three goals and two assists on the day.  Gates had a team-high three assists and four ground balls to goal along with her goal.

Rothrock closed out the game with two goals, while Carroll notched a goal and one helper.

Mackenzie Corbett made six saves in net for the win.

The Golden Flyers will travel to Clermont, FL for their Spring Break trip next week.  Nazareth takes on Emerson at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Methodist at 12 p.m. Thursday.
