Updated StatsSTEVENSON, MD. – Sixth-ranked York College (Pa.) pulled away late to hand ninth-ranked Nazareth its first loss of the season, 13-8, in the Greene Turtle Classic Friday afternoon hosted by Stevenson College.
Nazareth drops to 4-1 on the season, while York improves to 7-0.
Each squad matched blow-for-blow in the opening three and half quarters as a
Luke Wooters goal evened the score at seven with 10:04 remaining in the third. The Spartans scored the go-ahead goal for good at the 8:07 mark – eventually expanding their lead to 10-7 heading into the final quarter.
Nazareth's only goal over the final 20 minutes of the second half came at the hands of
Anthony Basile to cut the lead to 11-8 with 5:45 left on the clock.
Wooters scored the first goal of the game past the midway point of the first quarter on a feed from
Troy Haefele.
Later in the first,
Connor Chapman scored an unassisted goal to even the score at two apiece.
The Spartans built a 6-3 advantage before Nazareth notched a pair of tallies less than a minute apart.
Hunter Burdick and
Paul Walter scored with assists credited to Wooters.
York led 7-5 at the half.
Matt O'Neill scored the other goal for Nazareth to start the third quarter.
Scott Brown registered 10 saves in net for the Golden Flyers.
Wooters finished with two goal and four assists, while Burdick ended the day with two goals.
Luke Longo registered a team-high five ground balls.
Keanan O'Brien also had two caused turnovers.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday for the Greene Turtle Classic, squaring off against Denison at 12:30 p.m.
