Updated statsTAMPA, Fla. -- Tenth-ranked Nazareth jumped on Clarkson early and often Saturday as the Golden Flyers remained unbeaten in men's lacrosse with a 17-7 victory over Clarkson in a neutral-site game played at the University of Tampa.
Nazareth improved to 4-0 as senior attackmen
Troy Haefele and
Luke Wooters combined for 11 goals and seven assists to spearhead the offense. Junior midfielder
Hunter Burdick scored twice and contributed two assists and sophomore
Paul Walter also scored twice.
Clarkson, now 1-3 overall, scored the first goal of the game less than two minutes into the first quarter, but Nazareth responded by scoring the next 10 goals -- six in the first quarter and four in the second -- to take a commanding lead. Burdick scored unassisted to tie the score, then Wooters added three of his goals before the quarter expired, including the sixth goal with just :01 left in the first period.
Second-quarter goals by Burdick, Wooters (5 goals, 5 assists), Haefele (6 goals, 2 ssists) and
Matt O'Neill boosted Nazareth's lead to 10-1 before two goals by Clarkson interrupted the string. Goals by Walter and Haefele closed out the first half scoring for Nazareth to give the Golden Flyers a 12-3 lead at the half.
The onslaught for Nazareth continued into the third quarter as the Golden Flyers scored four more times, including the first career goal for freshman attackman
Anthony Basile. Haefele closed out the Nazareth scoring with a man-up tally just 16 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Senior
Scott Brown started in goal for Nazareth and played into the third quarter and made six saves. Freshman Rob O'Toole came in to make six more saves and junior
Michael Cuciti played part of the fourth quarter.
Sophomore
Seth DeLisle was dominant on faceoff as he won 13 of 17 draws. Nazareth won 18 of 26 draws overall and had a 44-34 edge in shots.
Nazareth returns to Rochester Sunday, then hits the road again next weekend for two games at Stevenson, Md. The Golden Flyers play York, Pa. Friday at 3 p.m. and Denison, Ohio Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
