Box l Updated Stats ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick's Caitlin Corbett missed the second of two free throws in the closing seconds, as Nazareth held on for an 82-81 road victory on Tuesday night. Corbett converted the first free throw with :03 seconds on the game clock before coming up short on the next attempt. The Hawks corralled the final rebound, but a Taylor Vonasek shot attempt was off the mark.
Nazareth gains important ground in the standings with the win, moving to 15-6 overall and 8-4 among conference foes. Hartwick falls to 9-12 and 7-6, respectively.
Nazareth came out with strong in the first five minutes of the opening quarter, including pouring in the first seven points. Veronica Peck delivered a crafty behind-the-back pass to Lindsey Kelly for the layup and a 7-0 advantage.
Nazareth went cold from the field in the final five minute stretch of the quarter, scoring just four more points to allow Hartwick to climb in front, 25-19.
A 7-0 run over the first two minutes of the second gave the Golden Flyers a brief lead at 26-25. The Hawks regained the lead shortly after and led the rest of the half, sparked by hot shooting on 17-for-30 from the floor (56.7 percent). The Hawks took a 43-36 into the break.
Nazareth used a big third quarter, outscoring Hartwick 24-15, to open up a 60-58 margin.
In the final quarter Nazareth relinquished its lead near the five minute mark, before Julia Brew nailed a jumper to give Nazareth a 71-70 lead.
Kelly Broderick converted two free throws and a jumper on back-to-back possessions to push the lead to 75-72.
Hartwick's Corbett came up with a steal and bucket with 1:30 to play, giving the Hawks a one point lead. That was short lived though as Brew, who nailed four triples in the game, connected just six seconds later to make it 82-80.
Sam Sorge drained at least five 3-pointers (5-for-7) for the fourth time this season, scoring a team-high 24 points.
Brew also chipped in four 3-pointers en route to 20 points (8-of-16). Kelly notched 16 points (8-of-13) and pulled down 15 rebounds for her fourth consecutive and 11th overall double-double of the season.
Peck dished out nine assists with just one turnover. She also added nine points.
Nazareth begins a four-game home stand to close out the regular season on Friday when it hosts Alfred at 8 p.m.
