Updated statsROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth won for the second straight Saturday in men's lacrosse as the Golden Flyers overcame at early deficit to take a 12-10 victory over Springfield on Nazareth's artificial turf field.
Ranked 16th nationally by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, Nazareth improved to 2-0 overall. Springfield dropped to 1-1.
Seniors
Troy Haefele and
Luke Wooters provided most of the damage Saturday by combining for six goals and seven assists. Wooters scored four more times to increase his career-leading goal total to 148. Haefele scored twice to boost his career goal total to 142, tying him with Marty Kelly for second place on the Nazareth's all-time list. Senior
Matt O'Neill contributed two goals and two assists and sophomore
Paul Walter added a pair of goals. Nazareth was able to maximize possession time with the help of sophomore
Seth DeLisle, who won 16 of 24 draws and scooped by nine ground balls.
Springfield's Dom Abate accounted for the game's first goal, but Nazareth answered with first-quarter goals from
Joe Eiskant and Wooters to take a 2-1 lead and the Golden Flyers never trailed again. Nazareth added five more goals in the second period and three in the third and opened a five-goal advantage, 10-5, following a goal by
Nick Loscalzo off a pass from
Matt O'Neill midway throught the third quarter.
Three straight goals enabled Springfield to close with 10-8 early in the fourth quarter, but Nazareth got goals from Haefele and
Paul Walter to maintain the lead.
After Springfield tied the score at 2-2 early in the second quarter, Walter, O'Neill and Wooters converted for Nazareth within a stretch of 2:29 to extend Nazareth's lead to 5-2. Springfield's Dylan Sheehan scored to interupt the string, but Wooters and Haefele each scored before the half ended as Nazareth led 7-4 at the break.
Nazareth took a seemingly commanding lead at 10-5 following Loscalzo's goal with 6:33 left in the third, but Springfield got goals from Maxwell Abendroth and Brendan Dooley late in the third quarter and a goal by Abate early in the fourth to close within 10-8. Walter's second goal of the game and fourth of the season midway through the fourth enabled Nazareth to regain its three-goal lead. Haefele later scored his team-leading ninth goal with 2:13 lrft.
Nazareth had advantages in shots (39-29) and ground balls (40-28) and was successful on all 14 of its clearing attempts. Three of Nazareth's goals came on extra man, while Springfield went 2-for-2 with a man up.
Senior
Scott Brown had five saves in goal while Jake Reynolds had 11 saves for Springfield.
Nazareth is home again Friday against Cortland in non-league action at 4 p.m.
