ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth women's basketball struggled from the floor Saturday night, shooting 31 percent (18-of-59), as the University of Rochester cruised to a 71-49 victory in the final game of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout.
The Golden Flyers drop to 3-3 overall, while Rochester improves to 6-1 on the season.
Nazareth shot just 30 percent in the first half (9-for-30).
Lizzie Straub was a bright spot in the half, going 3-for-3 for seven points. She hit a 3-pointer early in the game to give Nazareth a short-lived lead at 7-5.
The score remained close for much of the first half even with the poor shooting. A jumper from
Shelby Benjamin cut the Yellowjackets lead to 21-19.
Nazareth scored just six points over the final 7:23 of the half as Rochester took a 37-25 advantage into the break.
In the third quarter, the Golden Flyers did not record a field goal until a
Sam Sorge jumper four minutes in to make it 54-27. The Golden Flyers did not score another basket in the quarter.
The final quarter was a huge improvement for Nazareth, outscoring Rochester 22-14, however it was too little too late.
Sorge finished with 17 points (5-for-17), while
Samantha Peebles poured in 10 of her 13 points (4-of-8) in the second half.
Rachel Benedict grabbed 10 rebounds and chipped in four points.
Nazareth will have its home-opener on Thursday, when it will host Wells College at 6 p.m.
