Women's Hoops Downs Previously Unbeaten Fredonia, 74-65

FREDONIA, NY – Visiting Nazareth handed Fredonia its first loss of the season Tuesday night 74-65, behind a career-high 19 points from Samantha Peebles.  Peebles went 6-for-8 form the field and 6-for-7 from the charity stripe, to go along with a season-high six steals.

Nazareth improves to 3-1 with the win, while Fredonia drops to 4-1.

The Golden Flyers mustered a strong start to the game, shooting 10-for-17 from the floor (59 percent) in the first quarter, including draining 4-of-7 from 3-point range.  Sam Sorge hit two of Nazareth's 3-pointers during the quarter.

Nazareth led 10-8 with 4:21 remaining in the quarter before closing on a 15-3 run, opening up its lead to 25-11.

The Golden Flyers kept a safe distance between the Blue Devils in the second quarter and took a 41-28 halftime lead.  Peebles was 4-of-5 from the field to lead Nazareth with nine points.

In the third quarter, Fredonia cut the lead to single digits at 47-39 with under five minutes to play.  The Golden Flyers closed on a 13-4 run to re-gain a 60-43 margin heading into the fourth quarter.  Peebles knocked down four free throws and added a jumper during the offensive burst.

The Golden Flyers held a double-digit lead until under three minutes left in the game.  Fredonia went on a 7-0 spurt to cut Nazareth's advantage to 72-65 before Sorge hit a layup at the 1:49 mark to stop the run.  It was the final points scored in the game. 

Sorge ended the game with 16 points (6-for-11) and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year.

Rose Pedretti added eight points, while Delaney Martin and Rachel Benedict each chipped in six.

Nazareth returns to action Friday when it will take on RIT at 6 p.m. in the Mark's Crosstown Pizzeria Shootout.  The game will be hosted at St. John Fisher College.
