Wells boxCORTLAND, N.Y. – Nazareth opened its 2015 season with a pair of contests Friday at the Red Dragon Classic, hosted by SUNY Cortland. The Golden Flyers recorded a three set win (25-22, 25-22, 25-20) over SUNY Geneseo, before dropping a five set contest (19-25, 19-25, 25-21. 25-23, 18-26) to Wells College.
Senior
Jennifer Hicks paved the way in the first match with 13 kills, collecting a .600 attack percentage.
Celia Cordero and
Cady Messmer each tallied 10 kills apiece, while
Maureen Thayer notched 32 assists. In addition, Messmer registered 13 digs along with sophomore
Lindsay Bynon.
In the second match of the day, the Golden Flyers took the opening two sets, each by a score of 25-19, before the Express answered to win the next two sets. The decisive fifth set called for extra action with Wells pulling off an 18-16 win to complete the comeback.
Messmer and Hicks combined for 29 kills in the contest, with 15 and 14, respectively. Freshman
Olivia Krick finished with 21 digs for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers are back in action Saturday at the Red Dragon Classic, squaring off against Stockton at 1:30 p.m. followed by St. Lawrence University at 4 p.m.
