ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth dominated Houghton in Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse action Friday. The Golden Flyers built an 11-0 halftime lead and went on to take a 15-0 victory over the Highlanders on the Golden Flyers' Artificial Turf field.

It was the Empire 8 Conference opener for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 6-2 overall. Houghton is 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference games. The game marked the third shutout victory in Nazareth's women's lacrosse history. The Golden Flyers blanked RIT, 13-0, in 2003 and Alfred, 16-0, in 2005.

Fourteen different players scored in Friday's romp, led by freshman Haley DeVona, who had three goals and two assists. Sophomore Kate Rothrock added one goal and three assists. Freshmen Katie Carroll and Morgan Johnson each were credited with their first career goal.

DeVona scored less than a minute into the game off an assist from senior Brooke Sullivan to start the scoring. Houghton had difficulty clearing the ball and had 30 turnovers. Rothrock and fellow sophomores Gabbie Charles, Heather Groot, Leah Marvin and Jamie Martin also scored in the first half, along with junior Carly Gates, seniors Sullivan and Bri Mancini and Carroll.

DeVona's third goal of the game came before the second half was two minutes old. Senior Suzie Gray, sophomore Hayley Spoljaric and Johnson also scored for Nazareth.

The Golden Flyers had a whopping 30-5 edge in shots and a 25-12 advantage in ground balls. Senior Ashley Kirch played the first half in goal and made three saves. Freshman Mackenzie Corbett played the final 30 minutes and had one save.

Nazareth is home again Saturday for another Empire 8 contest against 17th-ranked St. John Fisher at 3 p.m.
