Updated statsONEONTA, N.Y. -- Junior forward
Maurice Mills was one of three Nazareth players to score more than 20 points Saturday as he went over the 1,000-point mark in career scoring, but it wasn't enough as host Hartwick outscored Nazareth in Empire 8 men's basketball action, 100-88.
The game was the season finale for the Golden Flyers, who finished the season 10-15 overall and 6-10 in conference games. Hartwick improved to 15-10 overall and 10-6 in the E8 and clinched a spot in next week's conference tournament that will be hosted by St. John Fisher.
Mills led the Golden Flyers with 24 points and became the 21st Nazareth player to reach the 1,000-point plateau. He'll start next season with 1,003. Sophomore
Dan Morse also finished the season strong by scoring a career-high 22 points. Junior
Nick Nadeau had 21 points and junior
Mitch Ford had 14 points and seven rebounds. Hartwick, in the end, had too many offensive weapons for the Golden Flyers as five players scored in double figures, led by Justin Pratt with 35 points.
Nazareth had the lead early in the game before Hartwick seized control for good. A basket by Jake Sinicki (11 points) with 14:14 left in the first half gave the Hawks the lead for good at 14-12. That triggered a 30-17 scoring run that ended with Hartwick on top 42-29 with 5:14 left in the half. The lead stretched to 16 points, 52-36, with less than two minutes to play in the half, but Morse and Ford each sank three-point shots before the half ended to pull Nazareth to within 10 at the break, 52-42.
That was as close as the Golden Flyers would get as Hartwick pulled away again in the second half and led by as many as 23 points, 78-55, following a three-pointer by Pratt with 12:12 left.
Nazareth shot the ball well in hitting 33 of 67 field goal attempts (49.3), but Hartwick was even better as the Hawks sank 33 of 58 shots (56.9 percent), including 13 of 29 three-pointers (44.8 percent). Hartwick also sank 21 of 23 free throws (91.3 percent).
