Updated statsWellesley, Mass. -- The Nazareth College women's volleyball fell 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 to Wellesley in its opening match
on Saturday at the Wellesley Invitational. The Golden Flyers came back to win their second match as they topped Southern Maine in four sets, 24-26, 25-18, 25-15, 26-24.
The Golden Flyers will bring an overall record of 15-14 into Wednesday's non-conference match at Geneseo at 7 p.m.
Against Southern Maine, junior
Cady Messmer posted a career high with 20 kills as an outside hitter on 46 swings for a .283 hitting percentage. She also had two service aces and five digs. Freshman
Kelsey Milligan also equaled a career high with 13 kills on 25 swings for a .320 hitting percentage. Nazareth had 56 kills overall in the match, including eight more from freshman
Celia Cordero, who also had a team-high 11 digs. Junior setter
Maureen Thayer had 34 assists.
Messmer had seven of her kills in the match-clinching fourth set and Milligan added five of her kills, including one on Nazareth's 25th point. A Southern Maine attacking error ended the match.
Against Wellesley, Nazareth held a 19-12 lead in the opening set, however Wellesley ripped of 10 straight points to take the lead and held on the late for the set.
In the second set, Nazareth also held a sizeable advantage as a kill from
Carmen Sapp made it 19-13, however the Blues managed to rally once again to win the set.
Wellesley  finished off the third set scoring 12 of the final 15 points to close out the game.
Messmer added a team-high 10 kills while Cordero and Milligan added five apiece. Thayer finished with 20 assists and
Olivia Krick notched seven digs.
