Game 2ITHACA, N.Y. -- Back in action for the first time in three weeks, Nazareth's women's softball team was blanked twice by Ithaca Sunday in a pair of Empire 8 Conference games at the Bombers' Kostrinsky Field. Both games ended in 8-0 scores.
With several postponements due to inclement weather, the Golden Flyers played their first conference games of the season and now stand at 0-2 in Empire 8 play and 3-9 overall. Ithaca is 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8.
Nazareth managed just two hits in each game. Sophomore
Maureen Rogers had a pair of singles in the first game, which had a mercy rule ending after the Bombers scored six runs in the sixth inning. Nazareth best scoring chance came in the first inning when
Kailey Ritch drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a single by Rogers. After
Sarah Cipperly grounded into a fielder's choice,
Carly Pike walked, but all three runners were left on base when Sophia Rhodes struck out swinging to end the threat.
Freshman
Nicole White pitched for Nazareth and took the loss after allowing nine hits and five earned runs over five-plus innings. Ithaca's Jessie Fleck had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.
The second game was shortened to five innings after Ithaca scored one run in the third inning, six more in the fourth and one in the fifth. Nazareth got singles from Ritch in the first inning and
Morgan Ross in the third, but the Golden Flyers never advanced a runner past first base.
Danae Wetherbee pitched for Nazareth and was tagged for seven earned runs on 11 hits. The Bombers had 13 hits overall, with Julianne Vincent collecting two, including a two-run triple.
Nazareth was scheduled to host Utica in a doubleheader Saturday, but those games were postponed and rescheduled for April 22. Nazareth is scheduled to host Geneseo in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at 3 and 5 p.m. respectively.
