ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Manhattanville's Luc Van Natter scored on a penalty shot just 31 seconds into overtime Friday as the visiting Valiants edged Nazareth 3-2 in an ECAC West men's hockey game played at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
The goal capped a come-from-behind win for the Valiants, who improved to 11-8-1 overall and 4-5-1 in conference games. It was Manhattanville's second win of the season over the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 6-14-1 overall and 2-8-1 in the ECAC West. The two teams play again Saturday at 4 p.m.
All three of Manhattanville's goals came off Nazareth penalties. Van Natter's game winner came after Nazareth defenseman
Geoff Bagnall was whistled for throwing his stick in the overtime. Van Natter beat Nazareth goaltender
Ed Zdolshek for his team-leading 11th goal of the season. Nazareth had nine penalties in the game for a total of 32 minutes.
Van Natter's goal came after the Valiants had tied the score with 4:09 left in regulation on a power play goal by Mark Rivera.
Nazareth had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by
Ben Blasko and
Mark Zavorin. Blasko's goal was his team-leading ninth of the season and came just 31 seconds into the first period with assists from
David Seward and
Jordan Ciccarello. Manhattanville tied the score less than three minutes later with Nazareth's
James Redman in the box for tripping. Rich Meyer converted on the power play this time for his first goal of the season.
Nazareth had 19 minutes in penalties in the second period, including a five-minute major and a game misconduct to Seward for checkinig from behind. The Golden Flyers managed to kill that opportunity, which eventually resulted in a 5-on-3 chance after Ciccarello took a minor penalty for slashing.
Nazareth eventually converted on a power play of its own with 1:27 left in the second period as Zavorin made a fine individual effort, going around two defenders to score his fifth goal of the season.
Travis Hill assisted.
The score remained in Nazareth's favor at 2-1 until Rivera's goal that forced the overtime.
Nazareth had a 30-27 advantage shots. Zdolshek had 24 saves. Manhattanville's Alex Scola had 28 saves.
