GENEVA, N.Y. – Host Hobart used a pair of first-period goals to skate past Nazareth, 2-1, in an ECAC West men's hockey playoff game at Hobart's Cooler Ice Arena. Nazareth lost despite a 46-34 advantage in shots on goal.
The Statesmen (14-8-4) will move on to play at top-seeded Utica in a semifinal matchup Sunday at 4 p.m. Nazareth finished its second season of intercollegiate play with a 8-16-2 overall record.
Hobart's Tommy Fiorentino scored on the game's first shot just 34 seconds into the game, beating Nazareth goaltender
Ed Zdolshek with assists from Tommaso Traversa and Ian Coleman.
The Statesmen scored again at 18:53 as Nick Bingaman broke free to score on a shot over the left shoulder of Zdolshek to make it 2-0. Ryan Michel assisted.
Nazareth got on the board with just :09 left in the period as
Don Olivieri scored on a blast from the left point off an assist from
Chris Murray.
Nazareth had the better of the play in the second and third periods as the Golden Flyers outshot Hobart 34-21 but couldn't score. Murray had 11 shots overall.
Scott Dawson had seven and Olivieri six.
Nazareth went scoreless on five power play chances, including one on a Hobart tripping penalty with less than four minutes left. Nazareth also pulled Zdolshek for the final minute in favor of a sixth skater, but still couldn't capitalize. Lino Chimineti shined in goal for the Statesmen by making 45 saves. Zdolshek made 32 for the Golden Flyers.
