BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Host Buffalo State scored the game-winning goal 35 seconds into the sudden-death overtime period Tuesday as the Bengals defeated Nazareth, 3-2, in a non-conference men's hockey game at the Ice Arena.
The Bengals rallied to tie the score and force overtime on a goal with 2:27 left in regulation. Buffalo State improved to 7-7-3 overall, while the Golden Flyers came up short despite a 39-29 edge in shots on goal and dropped to 2-11-1 overall. Nazareth plays two more non-conference games this weekend -- at Oswego Friday at 7 p.m. and home against Cortland Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Freshman Taylor Pryce was credited with the game-winning goal for the Bengals, who rallied from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1. Brett Hope, who assisted on the game-winning goal, scored the game-tying goal late in regulation.
Nazareth scored goals in each of the first two period and clung to the one-goal advantage late into the final period. Sophomore
Packy Jones scored his second goal of the season at 12:12 of the first period off assists from freshman
Ben Blasko and sophomore
James Redman.
Hope scored for the Bengals at 1:33 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1, but Nazareth answered less than three minutes later with a goal from junior
Tom Seravalli, who redirected a shot from the blueline by Redman, who gained an assist along with freshman
Chris Murray.
The score went unchanged until less than three minutes remained as Hope scored his second goal of the game following a scramble in front of Nazareth netminder
Joe Gladnick, who was making his third start of the season and his first appearance since Dec. 10 at Cortland.
Nazareth's edge in shots included a 16-8 advantage in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but Bengals' goalie Kevin Carr made 37 saves, while Gladnick had 26 for the Golden Flyers.
