ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore
Kieran McCoy scored his first-career goal for host Nazareth late in the first half, but Brockport tied the game before halftime, then tallied three second half goals to defeat the Golden Flyers 4-1 in a physical non-conference men's soccer game.
Saturday's contest was the second game for each team in the Doug May Memorial Tournament, hosted by Nazareth. On Friday, the Golden Flyers knocked off Canton while Brockport defeated RIT. The Tournament opened the season for both teams.
McCoy scored at the 42:15 mark of the first half to break the scoreless tie. The scoring opportunity came as a result of a defensive miscue as the Golden Eagle defender intended to head the ball back to his goalkeeper, Casey Sullivan. Sullivan, however, was anticipating the ball to go another direction. McCoy intercepted the pass to score the unassisted goal.
With only 10 seconds remaining in the first half, Matthew Roorda scored the game-tying goal after receiving a pass from Ryan Phillips. It was Roorda's first goal of the season.
Brockport took the lead and secured the victory with three second-half goals, which came in a span of 14:32. Bobby Ross scored the Golden Eagles' second and eventual game-winning goal at the 70:08 mark. Collin Goettel was credited with the assist on the goal by Ross. The goal came about 25 seconds after a Golden Eagles' corner kick as Brockport was able to maintain possession.
Paul Altobelli added the Golden Eagles' third goal less than three minutes following Ross' goal after he received a pass from Peter DiLorenzo. DiLorenzo was on the scoring end of Brockport's fourth goal, which came with 5:20 to play in regulation. Cody Zavaglia set up DiLorenzo's goal.
Nazareth's offense threatened in the closing minutes of the game as senior
Scott Duarte had three shots turned away by Sullivan to preserve Brockport's lead.
The Golden Eagles finished with a 14-13 edge in total shots while each team put six shots on goal. Junior #J.P. Horan# made two saves. Sullivan was credited with five saves.
Nazareth is in action again on September 3rd at Cortland. The Golden Flyers return to Nazareth on September 14th to host Swarthmore.
