Nazareth falls at Cortland, 5-1

Golden Flyers host Geneseo in Frozen Frontier game Sunday

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Host Cortland scored three times in the first 12 minutes of play in a non-conference men's hockey game Tuesday and Red Dragons went on to take a 5-1 victory over the Golden Flyers. Sophomore Jon-Paul Durso scored Nazareth's lone goal in the third period.

Cortland improved to 4-6-2 overall, while Nazareth dropped its seventh game in a row and fell to 1-8-1 overall. The Golden Flyers return to action Sunday to host Geneseo as part of the Frozen Frontier at Frontier Field. Game time is 12 p.m.

The Red Dragons snapped a five-game winless streak as they scored just 41 seconds into the opening period. A.J. Moyer scored off assists from Kyle Herring and Mike Henrici. The next two goals came just 1:49 apart as Casie Garrison and Nick Zappia converted to give Cortland a commanding advantage.

Neither team scored in the second period, but Nazareth's Jordan Ciccarello was whistled for an interference penalty with just 14 seconds left in the period. With Ciccarello in the penalty box to start the third period, the Red Dragons scored again, just 52 seconds into the period, as Adam Bevilacqua delivered the power play goal off assists from Zappia and Ryan Wagner.

Following Cortland's fourth goal, Joe Gladnick replaced Ed Zdolshek in the Nazareth goal. Nazareth got on the board at 7:38 of the period as Durso scored his second goal of the season on a slapshot from the right circle.

The Red Dragons added an empty-net goal with 25 seconds left as Zappia scored his second goal of the game.

Nazareth had a 39-30 advantage in shots on goal and a 49-39 edge in faceoffs. Chris Murray had a team-best six shots, while Mark Zavorin had four. Zdolshek made 19 saves before allowing the fourth goal. Gladnick made six saves. Lyle Rocker had 38 saves for Cortland.
