Nazareth falls to Elmira, 4-2

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Host Elmira scored twice in the opening period and never trailed thereafter as the Soaring Eagles defeated Nazareth, 4-2, in an ECAC West men's hockey game at the Murray Athletic Center.

Elmira improved to 2-2 both overall and in conference games. Nazareth is 1-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in ECAC West action. Sophomore Scott Andler and freshman Justin LaCorte scored goals for the Golden Flyers.

Elmira scored a short-handed goal and a power-play goal to take the early lead in the first period. Andler scored a power-play goal early in the second period for Nazareth off assists from Chris Murray and Mark Zavorin, but Elmira responded with two more goals before the second period expired to take a commanding advantage.

Jesper Strale scored again on the power play and Carter Shinkaruk scored an even-strength goal to extend Elmira's lead to 4-1. LaCorte contributed his second goal of the season off an assist from Tom Seravalli at 5:05 of the third period, but Nazareth was unable to generate anything more.

Sophomore Joe Gladnick started the game in goal for the Golden Flyers and had 26 saves, but was pulled after Elmira's fourth goal in favor of Friday night's starter Ed Zdolshek, who made 17 saves.

Elmira had a 47-44 edge in shots and was two-for-eight on the power play. Nazareth converted on just one of nine power play chances.

The game was the second in two nights for both teams. Nazareth tied ninth-ranked Hobart Friday, 4-4, while Elmira lost to Utica, 4-3. Nazareth is on the road for two games next weekend as the Golden Flyers visit Neumann Friday at 7 p.m. and Manhattanville Saturday at 4 p.m.
