Nazareth splits pair at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth split a non-conference doubleheader at Oswego Thursday. The Lakers limited the Golden Flyers to just one hit in a 9-1 victory in the first game. The Golden Flyers' bats responded with 10 hits in the second game for a 4-2 victory.

Nazareth is 8-22 overall. Oswego is 10-17.

Freshman Corrin Spallone had the only hit for Nazareth in the first game, a triple in the fifth inning. The game was tied 1-1 through three innings before Oswego broke the game open with two runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth.

Nazareth led 1-0 after scoring in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Kailey Ritch led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Liz Toner, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.

Oswego tied the game in the third as sophomore Sammie Schroeter cracked a solo home run off Spallone, who was starting in the pitcher's circle for the third time this season. Oswego went ahead 3-1 with two runs on two hits in the fourth. The Lakers scored six more runs on four hits in the fifth to end the game prematurely. Katie Bredin's two-run single was among the key hits.

Spallone was the losing pitcher despite nine strikeouts. Sarah Thayer was the winning pitcher for Oswego as she struck out four.

In the second game, freshman Sophia Rhoades had three hits in four at bats to back the strong pitching of senior Kelly Kocher, who tossed a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Toner and sophomore Meg DeMario each had two hits.

Nazareth went ahead in the first inning after Toner singled with one out and eventually scored on an infield grounder by Rhoades. Oswego tied the score with a run in the third, but Nazareth regained the lead in the fifth as Ritch walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Toner and scored on a single by Sarah Cipperly.

Nazareth scored again in the sixth as Rhoades led off with a walk and scored one out later on a triple by Melissa Reeves. Nazareth scored again in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Rhoades.

Nazareth returns to Empire 8 Conferencce play this weekend with road doubleheaders at Elmira Saturday and at Stevens Sunday.
