HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- In one of the wildest games in recent memory, host Houghton rallied for five second-half goals Saturday to outscore Nazareth in an Empire 8 Conference men's soccer match, 7-4, at Burke Field.
The defeat dropped Nazareth to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in E8 games. Houghton is 5-5-1 overall and 1-2 in conference games. The game was the first between the two teams since 1994 and the seven goals is the most allowed in a game by Nazareth since a 7-0 loss to Hobart on Sept. 25, 1993.
Nazareth had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before the Highlanders unleashed an impressive second-half attack, scoring five straight times, including two goals each for Jared Toth and Jonathan Figueroa. Junior
James Wheeler scored once and added an assist for Nazareth, which also got goals from sophomore
Brian Lang (the first of his career), freshman
Anthony Calarco and junior
Ryan Foley.
It was Foley's unassisted score less than three minutes before halftime that gave Nazareth a 3-2 advantage. Houghton tied the score in the 58th minute as Michael Amico scored off assists from Michael Dix and John Carpenter.
Dix added the go-ahead score about five minutes later and goals by Figueroa, Toth and Kevin Miranda followed to give Houghton a commanding 7-3 advantage.
Houghton outshot Nazareth 18-12 overall, including 14-4 in the second half. Wheeler's goal, with less than three minutes left, was his team-leading ninth goal of the season. Sophomore #J.P. Horan# played all 90 minutes in goal and had four saves.
Nazareth is off until next Saturday when the Golden Flyers host St. John Fisher at 11 a.m.
